About Car Insurance claims in UAE

The latest car models and advancements in safety features are topics of great interest to readers and is what they like to research and read about. The tenure from buying a car to taking a car insurance policy is so swift that many drivers don’t find time to learn about insurance claims in depth.

In the aftermath of an accident filing for a car insurance claim can be tricky and at times you feel stuck not knowing the way ahead or reasons for rejection of your claim. Most car drivers know too little about insurance claims and want answers to the common questions in their minds. As experienced car insurance brokers in the UAE, we have listed answers to some of the top questions about car insurance claims.

1- What happens if I raise a false insurance claim? Is it a crime?

Upon submitting the claim, the inspection team will investigate the accident site and verify the facts of the case. During such investigations, if the claims team finds evidence of a staged accident deliberately done to receive a pay out, the insurer reserves the right to reject your claim. The insurance provider can also cancel your policy in case of repeated claim offenses. As per the UAE law,  falsifying claims is a crime and is considered as insurance fraud. Possible punishments range from fines to a jail term.

2- Can we file a claim without an FIR?

This depends on case to case. If your vehicle is stolen or if an accident causes a third party’s death or serious physical injury, you must file a FIR. To file a claim for minor losses brought on by minor accidents, however, no FIR is required.

3- Does filing car insurance claims increase the renewal premium?

No, filing claims against your policy does not increase the renewal premium. Premiums are calculated based on the car’s model, age and variant. However, filing for claims during the policy renewal period will lead to the loss of the No Claim Bonus (NCB) discount.

4- How long will a car insurance claim take to settle?

As all claims are different, the time varies from case to case depending on the nature of your claim. It all boils down to how clear-cut the claim is.  If you are prompt in submitting the necessary paperwork and attaching the evidence, the fastest settlement should ideally take only a few business days.

5- What are the common reasons for the rejection of claims?
  • All claims must have necessary information filled. Claims filed without exactly evaluating the extent of vehicle damage, or a doctor’s report to ascertain injuries can also result in an undervalued settlement
  • Filing an unnecessary claim where the repair costs are less than the deductible will lead to refusal of payouts.
  • Lack of enough evidence at the crash site can result in claim undervaluation or rejection.
  • Providing excessive or exaggerating information that misguide adjustors away from facts, lead to claim denial.
  • All claims for the accidents met while under the influence of alcohol or drugs are categorically rejected for accident-related losses.
