Health Insurance is mandatory in the UAE by 31st March 2023

Category: Health Insurance Published on: 12 Dec 2022

All emirates in the country must have required health insurance by the end of the first quarter of 2023.

On November 28 and 29, 2022, in Dubai, officials announced this new regulation at the 8th Health Insurance Conference. Attending the meeting were more than 150 professionals from the insurance and health services sectors. Only Dubai and Abu Dhabi currently mandate medical insurance despite the seven emirates.

According to Mr. Fareed Lutfi, secretary-general of the Emirates Insurance Association, the country’s required medical insurance will comparatively increase total written premiums by around AED50 billion ($13.6 billion) in 2022.

Laws and regulations that apply to the insurance industry are eventually being updated in collaboration and coordination with the UAE Central Bank. This will speed up the process of digital transformation and ease the delivery of services.

A Platform for Digital Healthcare

Most importantly one of the top health authorities in the UAE, the Ministry of Health and Community Protection, accredited medical facilities, and the private sector—which includes operating insurance companies—are all eager to link medical records on a digital healthcare platform that has received support from providers. The process is projected to be finished in the middle of 2023.

The digital platform streamlines the sharing of medical data between insurance companies and healthcare facilities. Healthcare is delivered regardless of where or when, and it centralizes data on a patient and his medical interventions. Mr. Lutfi asserts that the federal healthcare digital platform will benefit all clients and service providers while reducing insurance fraud.

During the conference, Mr. Khaled Muhammad Al-Badi, the chairman of the EIA, noted how swiftly coordination and cooperation with the Central Bank were progressing. He stated that the EIA and the central bank are in constant contact with regard to all matters pertaining to the insurance industry. It includes those with medical insurance in UAE and aims for potential remedies at the high cost of healthcare and the crucial requirement for utilizing a tariff system that controls the expenses of medical care.
